What we learn about unity in NA helps us discover how to be members of our family, members of our community, members of a team at work or play.

Living Clean, Chapter 1, “From Despair to Passion”

Before coming to NA, many of us had little experience of how to fit in. We felt like alien visitors and rarely felt like we belonged. We had a terrifying feeling that we were frauds and lived in fear that others would discover that we were hiding behind a window.

This feeling of loneliness and distrust made early recovery difficult. We wanted what the NA members had, but we couldn't open up enough to let anyone in. We had to start somewhere, so we tested the wisdom of the advice we'd heard by joining small local groups. Soon, we were with services and supporters. We started to feel part of the Brotherhood most of the time. Even when our sense of belonging changes, we often find that we are doing better than we feel. We remain works in progress.

By participating in our recovery, we learn to participate in life. We start talking to our families – we stay in a job long enough to get to know people and even let them get to know us. Thanks to NA and our rooming experiences, many of us were able to reconcile with our families, serve communities, and enjoy life. Our lives are transformed – we find fulfillment and purpose as we contribute to unity in all areas of our lives. Most days, we feel accomplished.

I will continue to push through my fears and fit in where feels right for me. I will continue to open up and give back so I can be a part of something bigger than myself.
