Good choice is best expressed in service - right service is "doing the right thing for the right reason".

Basic text, our symbol

When dealing with services in NA, we may dwell on the reasons why we choose or are chosen for a particular engagement. How "pure" is our motive? How involved is our ego?

A useful skill we possess sometimes leads us to the "right". Some of us are born leaders or organizers, have a talent for people relations, or are good with numbers or words. Our purpose can be as simple as following the suggestion of our supporter or another member. Sometimes we're motivated to join a committee based on who else is on it—admiring the moderator's recovery, or wanting to spend more time with our friends or someone we've fallen in love with.

There are also more spiritual motives. Maybe these are even more "correct". It could be a sincere desire to give something back. We are looking to find a purpose. We want to show our love for NA or expand our mind and spirit. Perhaps we prayed for guidance and stepped through the doors that opened, finding ourselves with a new commitment to service.

Maybe we just want to feel better about ourselves.

We cannot completely avoid the ego. Feeling good about ourselves is not inappropriate, nor is wanting validation or acceptance from others. It is natural and human to want to be seen positively by those around us, to want others to regain their trust in us.

We place our feet as firmly as possible on the foundation of good choice and let our primary purpose shape our choices. Pursuing the ideal of doing right services for the right reasons is grand. But we can't wait until the stars align and supersession comes our way. Now is the time.

Regardless of anything else that motivates me, I will focus on applying goodwill as I serve NA.
