In other words, things tend to continue working as they do unless something intervenes. The same can be said for humans.

When people experience inertia, it can signal our resistance to change. Drug addicts sometimes take this to extremes – imagine! When we're stuck or in constant motion, it can take a strong force to bring about change. That's why walking through the door of our first gathering is so special. This first, often hesitant action demonstrates an overeagerness. Looking back on that first sign of surrender, many of us may feel the presence of an outside force that spurred us into action. Individually and collectively, you could say the force is strong with us.

Then and now, rallies can provide a powerful antidote to inactivity. They offer inspiration and help us imagine a drug-free future. Beyond fantasy, we learn from each other's experience and try out new practical tools. We give ourselves a chance and learn to let the momentary or even obsessive thoughts of use come and go. By regularly attending the gatherings, we have frequent reminders of what kind of actions we can take to maintain our time clean or go deeper into recovery.

The NA program has the potential to change the direction or speed of the still suffering addict, but it takes some involvement and effort on our part. As one member said: "We say: 'It works if you work it', not 'It works if you imagine it'". We are not strangers to wishing things were different. At NA, we still hope and pray, but then we roll up our sleeves and get to work. As the age-old saying goes: "If nothing changes, nothing changes".

Whether I've let complacency slow my pace, or I've let constant motion block my perception, I invite a loving power greater than myself to lift me out of inertia.

["post-11490","spad","type-spad","status-publish","hentry
["GET
