We realize how much energy we spent protecting our fragile egos, imagining what others think of us, or carefully curating our image on social media. In our personal lives, we were often negative, selfish and demanding, neglecting to do the best we could with what we had. The Steps have a way of setting us on a more productive path in life. We see who we were, understand who we are, and clear out what is blocking us from adopting a more positive, selfless, and grateful approach to life.

Whether we're newcomers or long-timers, some of us take to seemingly selfless activities like ducks to water. But like anything that makes us feel good, we can take selflessness to unhealthy extremes. Ultimately, we love a good thing too much, avoiding examining ourselves, immersing ourselves in helping others. Many of us learn the hard way that unbridled generosity can hurt both the giver and the receiver. As the old saying goes: "You can't draw water from an empty well." The Steps help us build a more realistic self-concept and a life we don't want to run away from.

“To practice selflessness requires first having a sense of self,” in the words of one member. "I say to my supporters: First you, right after me!" We take responsibility for our personal well-being and seek harmony as we contribute to our common well-being. The principles of the Steps help us set healthy boundaries and strive for balance. For many of us, the idea of loving and serving others selflessly adds a new dimension to our spiritual self-care routine. We find ways to renew ourselves and gather fresh inspiration so that we can selflessly contribute to the unity of the NA.

I will take care of my spiritual condition so that I can love and serve selflessly and contribute to the unity of NA.
