This simple act can be the most important thing we ever do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Guiding Principles, Tradition Two, \u201cFor Groups\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many of us remember being greeted by complete strangers as we attended our first Narcotics Anonymous meeting. We felt strangely familiar in the recovery rooms, and that subtle feeling of belonging made all the difference. Every gesture mattered: a warm smile, a gentle hug, a list of appointments. When members looked us in the eye, asked our name, and treated us like people, we were amazed \u2013 in a good way.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming newcomers is one of the most important things we do at NA. It is important to be welcomed and it is important to welcome. Those of us who find it difficult to escape ourselves can learn a very important lesson from the gracious reception of new members. We take a break from our busy minds and strengthen our faith in the NA program: &quot;Against all odds, we are clean and it can work for you too.&quot; It&#039;s a message we all want to hear - it keeps us strong in Narcotics Anonymous.<\/p>\n<p>When we put aside our thoughts and feelings to welcome the newcomer, we increase the possibility of our recovery. We defy the self-centered and selfish nature of the disease of addiction. We put aside our problems and respond to the call of the newcomer. It offers perspective and reminds us that &quot;we only keep what we have by giving it away&quot;.
