Big or small, our awakenings are seen in our willingness to apply the spiritual principles and carry the message.<\/b><\/p>\n
Living Purely, Chapter 3, \u201cCreative Action of the Spirit\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n We may have hoped for easy answers to our drug problem when we attended our first meeting. We were hoping for a quick fix, some simple formula that would provide relief from our troubled existence - with it, we could get on with our lives. "I was hoping you'd cast a spell on me and then send me off with a reminder to take cold showers and sleep with a rabbit's foot under my pillow," joked one junkie. To our dismay, no one promised us immediate release. Worse, it was clear that working through all the Twelve Steps would take a considerable amount of time.<\/span><\/p>\n Although the simple solution we sought proved elusive, we reconciled ourselves to the idea that recovery is less like math and more like one of grandma's unwritten recipes \u2013 a little of this, a little of that, and so on. Our longing for relief or connection or awakening drives us to one concentration after another. Without fully recognizing it, willingness shows us the way.<\/span><\/p>\n We hear a member celebrating 30 days clean explain, \u201cI went to meetings every day and didn't take anything in between.\u201d We note it. Could this be the formula we've been looking for? It seems almost too simple and impossible at the same time. But maybe it's a good start \u2013 hello, open mind! We are willing to give it a try.<\/span><\/p>\n As our minds begin to clear, we awaken to the possibilities of a better life. We lean toward another formula that seems feasible: "Go to the meetings, find a supporter, read the literature." Check, check and check. We willingly perform these actions and practice humility by keeping things simple. We are given a pink card that reads "Just for today" and as we read it aloud, another light turns on. This seemed like a practical approach and we were willing to give it a try.<\/span><\/p>\n Our 30-day experience reveals the value of action. We made it this far! Holding up our keychain, we share, \u201cI'm celebrating 30 days today because I went to meetings every day and got nothing in between. I took the Core Text and found a supporter and find that there is life after drugs. As much as I wanted to understand what this recovery is, I'm learning to just do what everyone else is doing, and it seems to be working.\u201d And just like that, we deliver the message and offer hope to every addict in the room.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n No matter how many days I have, I recognize the awakening evident in my eagerness.
