Autonomy encourages groups to become strong and vibrant, but it also reminds them that they are a vital part of a larger whole: the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.<\/b><\/p>\n
It Works, Fourth Edition<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n We addicts can be quite creative in how we convey the simple message of recovery. We are free to create all kinds of gatherings that focus on specific areas of recovery or literature, at any time of day. Our autonomy allows us to establish a gathering that meets an unmet local need, has a unique format, or is aimed at a specific group of addicts who may feel more secure in accessing and delivering our primary purpose together. The possibilities are endless as our Fellowship continues to grow, strengthen, and reach even wider geographically. So inspiring!<\/span><\/p>\n But let\u2019s not forget the second half of the Fourth Tradition: \u201c\u2026 except in matters affecting other groups or NA as a whole.\u201d This warns of the pitfalls of using autonomy to divide us. To complain about important issues, such as finances, area guidelines, and \u201cviolations\u201d of the Traditions, and then refuse to participate in the solution is counterproductive and divisive. Autonomy is not an argument that allows us to say or do nothing more. Instead, we can choose to examine our urge to raise an issue, asking ourselves whether we want a solution or whether we simply want to make a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n Open-minded communication allows us to make decisions based on reality, without being burdened by personal opinions. Some members believe that agencies can have undue power over groups, and others may believe that all NA decisions must be made with the consent of the group. We hear a lot about what they do. But WE are them. With autonomy comes responsibility: as seen on NA pins and T-shirts, \u201cLet\u2019s do it!\u201d In reality, we are accountable to each other, to NA as a whole, and to communicating our disagreements, as well as our message, with as much respect as we can.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Freedom must be balanced with accountability and responsibility.
