As members of our team, we show up early and stay late. As advocates, we demonstrate love in action. We are elected to serve in various positions established by task forces and subcommittees to support our primary purpose. And we carry that spirit of service into our lives outside of NA. Giving what we have received is an expression of our gratitude and a large part of who we are as individuals and as a brotherhood.

Service gives us purpose and helps us find our place in the NA brotherhood, but our commitment to helping others can sometimes distort our perspective. We may be tempted to accumulate many more obligations than necessary. We may find ourselves neglecting our families and the work of our steps in favor of service to others. By operating in this way, many times noble motives for service are replaced by less so - such as avoidance, hubris and the desire for control. We learn to be realistic about our limits, allowing humility to temper our eagerness. It becomes easier to ask for help and recognize when saying no is the right thing to do.

One member shared, “When I see someone wanting to take on a lot of service, I know their heart is in the right place, but they're not doing themselves or us a favor by taking on too much. Our challenge is to temper our eagerness with some humility. Too much of this good thing is a bad thing for that addict and for those who have to deal with him."

To balance our excitement, we also become willing to think about our limits. We face our limitations collectively and as individuals. Time is not infinite. Our skills are not infinite. Sometimes our needs and passion simply exceed our abilities and energy. We find ourselves willing but not quite able to meet all the demands, or we notice the price we pay as we try to do too much. Honesty helps us recognize reality. Humility allows us to ask for and accept help.

I will consider the portions on my service plate and temper my eagerness with humility, sharing the blessings of service with others.

["post-11836","spad","type-spad","status-publish","hentry
["GET
