What some consider deep, dark secrets, others readily share, sometimes even as badges of honor. Many of us are okay with revealing the most gruesome details of our using days, the chaos of our childhoods, and our experiences of victimization. When it comes to Steps Four and Five, we think: No problem, I'm an open book! But as we do the work suggested, possibly using the Step Guide, there is a depth to these questions that goes far beyond our comfort. Revealing our own role in situations turns out to be messy, harrowing and enlightening all at once. For many of us, our pettiness, our unforgiving nature or wrongdoing, our explosive ego, our shame: These well-guarded parts of ourselves turn out to be far more important than the dramatic stories we thought we would tell.

Fortunately, we have had the benefit and experience of previous Steps to build trust in the program, each other, a Higher Power, and our sponsor. The Fifth Step is an opportunity for us to open our whole book and let another person witness our harder-to-tell stories. Even though we've been anxious about sharing our inventory with another human being, it's the first time we've admitted many of these things to ourselves.

Building a bond of trust requires both courage and vulnerability. As we practice this bond, a weight is lifted from our shoulders: We reveal the truth about ourselves and are not rejected. Many of us have not even realized how distant we were in our relationships as a result of the secrets we kept. Often, seeing our true self from someone else allows us to feel much lighter and open to other relationships. A bond of trust inspires us to compose others.

I am willing to practice trust by sharing my entire story with another human being. My goal is to build on my ability to trust and be trustworthy by applying what I have learned to other relationships.

["post-11907","spad","type-spad","status-publish","hentry
["GET
