Faithfulness implies that we are true and true to our message, that it is steadfast in all circumstances.<\/b><\/p>\n
The Principles That Guide Us, Tradition Ten, \u201cSpiritual Principles\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n As a spiritual principle, faithfulness means loyalty and commitment. When we faithfully share the NA message, we clarify our common understanding of the disease of addiction and our common solution. Translators think similarly about fidelity as a concept in their work. In translations\u2014of the NT or elsewhere\u2014fidelity refers to how well a translated document corresponds to the original. Although computers can substitute words of one language for those of another, the results are often meaningless. It takes the human touch and the work of skilled translators to convey the meaning, style and tone of any text.<\/span><\/p>\n They do more than transcribe - they interpret.<\/span><\/p>\n At Narcotics Anonymous, local translation committees and their professional partners ensure that translated literature is true to our message. This is not an easy task. Every new language group has to deal with words and phrases like junkie, clean and the disease of addiction to find how to capture their meaning, essence and spirit in the target language. NA members who serve on local translation committees play an important role in ensuring fidelity. Their experience with the NA program and their often impressive language skills help ensure that translated NA literature accurately reflects the ideas and spirit of the original.<\/span><\/p>\n Whether we are translating literature, speaking at a unity day celebration, or sharing with our group, we strive to use the language of NA with the same precision. A clear YES message is more than avoiding certain words. Clarity comes from living the NA way and dealing with the disease of addiction with our recovery program. When those before us wrote: "We admitted that we were powerless in the face of our addiction", they were focusing the First Step on the disease and not on the drugs. This genius move makes First Step relevant to members at every stage of recovery. When we use the language of NA to convey our experience faithfully, we contribute to an atmosphere of identification for all to hear. NA's message reflects our experience.
