Narcotics Anonymous First Step is unique. Instead of referring to a single symptom or substance, we admit our powerlessness against the disease that rules us.<\/b><\/p>\n
Our Guiding Principles, Fifth Tradition, \u201cFor Members\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Depending on who's telling the story, our First Step Over Disease was either (A) a moment of genius, (B) sheer luck, (C) the work of a Higher Power, or (D) all of the above. Our founding members knew that identifying a particular drug as the object of our vulnerability would not work with our diversity. They intended to create a place for all drug addicts where we could all identify. If avoiding reporting a substance was their only concern, then our First Step could simply be declaring that we are powerless against drugs. Instead, First Step points to the disease of addiction as our problem.<\/span><\/p>\n Our vulnerability to illness gives the First Step timeless significance. Our focus on addiction\u2014rather than an obvious symptom\u2014makes Step One as relevant to before we got clean as it is to decades of clean. Sure, drug use was the most obvious and destructive form of the disease, but ungovernability can surface long after we've stopped using. When looking outside ourselves to fix what's inside us seems like a good idea, we might be in trouble. \u201cWhen I admit my weakness, I stop looking outward and instead turn to my Higher Power,\u201d observed one member. Surrender to the First Step works as a brake on our sick thinking. This stoppage is what is needed to avoid some anarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n The continued usefulness of the First Step also affects how we think about the Fifth Tradition. The fact that we are all candidates to be the still-suffering addict reminds us to include more people as we address our primary purpose.
