Just as reparations teach us to forgive more, selfless service brings generosity, compassion, and awareness of our purpose.<\/b><\/p>\n
The Principles That Guide Us, Second Tradition, "Word for Word"<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Service trains us in how to interact with others and becomes the basis of mutual support and how we connect. Whether we go early to make coffee, go with a group to a mental health facility, or contribute our experience to a new book\u2014every act of service offers lessons we can incorporate into our daily lives.<\/span><\/p>\n Some promoters have a way of tricking us into doing service. We jump in to fill the print order and before we know it, we're subcommittee members. We become more generous with our time and energy because we find some satisfaction in helping. Plus, the company is good and costs nothing. Our generosity extends to the rest of our relationships \u2013 going the extra mile to help friends, family and, sometimes, even strangers. We feel ourselves changing as we become more generous and less self-centered.<\/span><\/p>\n We go early to open the room, knowing we might be the first person a newcomer meets. One member shared, \u201cI know the chairs I set up in my group are the same chairs that were set up for me before I came here.\u201d We remember how we felt when we first walked into our first meeting: nervous, wary, and with only a little hope. We see ourselves in these potential new members. Our hearts fill with compassion as we welcome them.<\/span><\/p>\n Service makes us feel like we have a purpose. Every time we say yes to a service opportunity, we connect to and contribute to something bigger than ourselves. All services to the Brotherhood deepen our commitment to Narcotics Anonymous. We are thoughtful and caring people - qualities we discovered and improved through NA's services.
