For many of us, the idea of giving voice to what’s going on in our heads is terrifying. What will people think? We prefer to say what we think others would like to hear—it doesn’t matter if it’s true. Some of us have no filter and blurt out whatever opinion we have at the time—it doesn’t matter if we truly believe it. Generally, clarity in thought, speech, and action is not where we operate from. When our connection to reality is not particularly strong, dishonesty comes naturally. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place to gain some clarity.

We are able to be more honest once we gain a better understanding of what is real. The Steps help us clarify what we have done in relation to who we are. They give us valuable perspectives on our experience so that we are better able to understand and express it. Our story changes because our relationship to truth changes. We lie less because we understand more. We speak for ourselves, not for other addicts and not for NA. Some begin their sharing with, “I am not here representing NA. The program is in the Basic Text. This is my own experience, including how I work the program outlined in the Basic Text.”

A better understanding of the external issues addressed in the Tenth Tradition helps us to insist on sharing more clearly. While causing controversy can be quite appealing to many of us, we strive to put our common well-being above all else. When we are honest with ourselves, we can discern what is important, how to navigate stormy waters, and what may not be material for recovery. The clarity we gain in NA includes the fact that as individuals we can (and do) have many opinions about external issues—and may need to share how they affect our recovery. We also begin to understand that NA does not share our opinions about external issues because, unlike us, it has none.

I am willing to be more honest today than I was yesterday.
