Sometimes things don't go as we would like. Our problem can be as simple as a broken cord or a line in front of a cash register. Or it can be something much more serious, like losing our job, our home, or someone we love. However, what we usually do is try to find a way to avoid our feelings, instead of admitting that those feelings are painful.
No one promised us that everything would be fine because we stopped using it. The truth is, life goes on, whether we drink or not. We will have good and bad days, pleasant and unpleasant feelings. Whatever they are, we no longer need to avoid them. We may experience pain, loss, sadness, anger, frustration, all those emotions we once drank for. We find that we can deal with these feelings cleanly. Our lives are not threatened, nor will the end of the world come because we struggle with our emotions. We gain faith that whatever our day brings, we will survive.
