It's relatively easy to accept the things we like; it's the things we don't like that we struggle with. Even if we were to remake the world and other people according to our taste, we would not find a solution. Speaking of which, the idea that the whole world was to blame for our problems was something that kept us going and nearly killed us.
By working the Steps, we begin to ask ourselves painful questions about the role we played in making our lives the way they were. In most cases, we found that what needed to change was our own attitude and actions, not the places, situations, and people around us.
In recovery, we pray for the wisdom to know the difference between those who can change and those who cannot. Then, after facing our reality, we pray that we find the willingness to change ourselves.
