"Addiction is a family disease, but we can only change ourselves."

Many of us come from extremely troubled families. There are times when the insanity in our family is unbearable. Sometimes we feel like we want to pack our bags and get as far away as possible.

We pray that our family will also follow the road to recovery, but unfortunately this does not always happen. Sometimes, even though we do our best to get the message across, we realize that we can't help those we love the most. Our collective experience shows us that we usually cannot help them because we are emotionally involved with them. We learn that it would be best to leave them in the care of our Higher Power.

We find that when we no longer try to solve our family members' problems, we give them the space they need to sort out their own affairs. When we remind them that we cannot solve their problems, we gain the freedom to live our own lives. We have faith that a loving God will take care of our relatives. Often, the best thing we have to offer our loved ones is the living example we set on the road to recovery. To protect our family and ourselves, we must let our loved ones find their own path to recovery.

Only for today

I will look after my own recovery and leave my family in the care of a Higher Power.
