September 28 / Hope

"Little by little, as we come out of our self-centeredness and turn more to the God of our understanding, despair turns to hope."
Main Text, p. 109

When we used it, it was always our relentless companion. It defined every moment in our day. Despair was the result of what we experienced in the use. No matter how much we tried to improve our lives, we sank into misery. Our attempts to control our lives often ended in failure. In a way, when we admitted helplessness in our First Step, we also acknowledged the desperation we felt.

The Second and Third Steps gradually lift us out of despair and give us hope, which becomes our companion in recovery. Having accepted that so many of our attempts to change have failed, we come to believe that there is a Power greater than ourselves. We believe that this Power can and will help us. To affirm in practice our hope for a better life, we put into practice the Second and Third Steps, asking this Power for guidance. As we trust more and more the matters of our daily lives to a Higher Power, the despair of our never-ending attempts at self-sufficiency disappears.

Just for today

I will reaffirm the decision asking me to take Step Three. I know that with a Higher Power in my life, there is hope.
