Open, honest and straightforward communication cultivates the spirit of service in our brotherhood and poisons the urge for government.
Twelve perceptions of NA services, twelfth perception
At its best, our service in NA is selfless – the right thing, done for the right reason. Selflessness can be difficult for us sometimes. It requires us to keep our egos in check while communicating with each other with honesty, directness and respect. As dedicated as we are, we can't do this perfectly, but it's something we strive for. When we make an honest effort to fulfill our primary purpose—whether one-on-one, through the home group, or in some part of our service system—we have the opportunity to enhance the best aspects of ourselves. This is a benefit to us as individuals as well as to our common well-being.
Selfless service calls us to apply all that we know about spiritual principles. The experience gained from working the Steps and applying the Traditions is greatly utilized. We learn a lot about open-mindedness when we work the Second Step, for example, and then, as we serve, open-mindedness takes on a new meaning as we exchange ideas in a work group. Similarly, the importance of participation first encountered in Tradition One reinforces our belief in the concept of rotation, making it a little easier to end a commitment. We practiced honesty and gained self-awareness as we took stock of our lives, past and present. This practice proves invaluable in the service as we strive to promote healthy, honest communication.
When we take care of our spiritual condition, it is easier to respond properly to service. We have done work within ourselves and can trust ourselves to act appropriately. We are able to set aside rigidity, ancient grudges, and the urge to control that can hinder the spirit of service. Fortunately, we are not all "sick" on the same day, and a mentally fit majority has a way of keeping our worst impulses in check. At some point, it will probably be our turn to play the role of the difficult member. The good news is that honest communication has a way of counteracting the countless forms our selfish will can take.
I will apply the spiritual principles of honesty and open-mindedness to my NA service today. I will encourage open communication and unity by recognizing the efforts of others to do the same.
