March 28 / Dealing with emotions

"Perhaps we fear that getting in touch with our emotions will cause an overwhelming chain reaction of pain and panic."
Main Text, p. 35

When we used, most of us couldn't or didn't want to feel too many emotions. When we were happy, we drank to feel even more happy. When we were angry or depressed, we drank to mask those feelings. Following this pattern throughout our use, we became so confused that we lost all touch with our emotions.

After some time in recovery, emotions that we had suppressed suddenly begin to surface. We may find that it is difficult for us to recognize our feelings. What we experience as anger may simply be frustration. What we recognize as severe depression may simply be sadness. In these situations we need to ask our supporter or other members for help. Instead of putting it down, we deal with our feelings by going to gatherings and talking about what's going on in our lives.

Only for today

I will not avoid the uncomfortable feelings I may be experiencing. I will face them with the support of my friends in recovery.
